Newcastle boss Chris Hughton has hailed Mick McCarthy for his leadership qualities ahead of the Magpies' clash with Wolves.

The two Premier League managers will go head to head on Saturday having once played alongside each other.

McCarthy and Hughton were Republic of Ireland team-mates and the latter says he has an enormous amount of respect for his one-time defensive colleague.

"The two things that very much come to mind are that Mick was always a leader, and his honesty," said Hughton.

"He was always very straight, and how he sees it is how he says it. He has a lot of good qualities, Mick."

Timing

Hughton hopes Newcastle can replicate Wolves' achievements last season in staying in the top flight after promotion from the Championship.

He will have his work cut out in doing so, though, with little in the way of funding to build on his current squad.

"It's always about the timing," said Hughton, who is determined to succeed in the Premier League.

"It's also about the feel at a club and what we have been able to do is go through some very difficult times, some very tough times.

"We have managed to change things around slightly and at the moment, there's a reasonably good feelgood factor at the club.

"But that's where we are and we know how quickly things can change."
