Bolton endured a night to forget in the second round of the Carling Cup as an Adebayo Akinfenwa double handed Northampton a Premier League scalp at The Reebok, while West Brom were humbled 3-1 at Hartlepool.

Middlesbrough and Wigan were both in cruise control in seeing off Yeovil and Notts County respectively, but elsewhere it was a tough evening for the top flight's finest as Hull were beaten on their travels to Swansea and Newcastle needed extra-time to see off Coventry.

Bolton boss Gary Megson spoke before the game of taking the competition seriously but his players put in an insipid display and were two down at the break.

In-form Northampton front-man Akinfenwa gave his side a 25th-minute lead from the penalty spot after Gavin McCann was adjudged to have handled in the box, before the same player grabbed his second with a well taken header three minutes later.

Bolton's woes were exacerbated when Gary Cahill was shown his marching orders as half-time approached for a tackle on Giles Coke that belonged more to a Bruce Lee film than football field.

Substitute Kevin Nolan got his side back into the contest with a goal with eight minutes remaining but Northampton stood firm to claim a memorable win.

Baggies out

West Brom were humbled in extra-time by League One Hartlepool as they lost 3-1 at the Victoria Ground. Robert Koren cancelled out Joel Porter's opener for Pools but it was the home crowd that went home happy as substitutes David Foley and Ritchie Barker both struck.

Hull's exit completed a hat-trick of upsets as they lost 2-1 at Swansea, again in extra-time.

Dean Windass put Phil Brown's side in an 11th minute lead but Gorka Pintado's strike forced an extra half hour. In the 105th minute of an entertaining game, Jordi Gomez secured an impressive win from the penalty spot, with Pintado having earlier missed a spot kick in normal time.

Owen's back

Michael Owen came off the bench to score his second goal in as many games as Newcastle beat Coventry 3-2 in what was a pulsating cup tie.

A Scott Dann own goal and another from the impressive James Milner put Kevin Keegan's side in cruise control before Clinton Morrison scored a beauty on the stroke of half-time with a curling effort from the edge of the box.

Newcastle must have thought they had done enough to seal a well-earned third round place, when in the third minute of added time Dann redeemed himself with a thumping header from a monumentally long throw. Owen, though, had the final say with a typically well taken winner.

Middlesbrough were far too strong for Yeovil and ran out convincing 5-1 winners at The Riverside.

Mido had the Teesside crowd in raptures with his third goal in as many games before Didier Digard - on his full debut - and Jeremie Aliadiere had them cruising at the break.

Yeovil's Gavin Tomlin grabbed his side's consolation after the interval when Boro fell asleep at a free-kick, before another debutant Marvin Emnes and Adam Johnson completed the scoring.

Premier League new boys Stoke safely negotiated their passage to the next round with a hard-fought 3-2 win on their travels to Cheltenham.

Second half goals from Glenn Whelan, with an excellent free-kick, and Richard Cresswell put Tony Pulis' side in control before the lively Ashley Vincent reduced the deficit. The win was secured by Jon Parkin's 78th minute effort, with Alex Russell's 90th minute strike scant consolation for Cheltenham.

Wolves have enjoyed an excellent start to the season but at Rotherham they fell to defeat as Mark Robins' side held their nerve in a penalty shoot-out, after 120 minutes of football had failed to yield a goal.

Wigan striker Henri Camara took his chance to impress with a brace that helped Steve Bruce's side to a 4-0 win over League Two Notts County. Egyptian striker Amr Zaki and Polish midfielder Tomasz Cywka completed the rout.

Leeds were excellent as they cruised past Crystal Palace at Elland Road, as efforts from Jonathan Douglas, Jason Beckford, Luciano Becchio and Enoch Showunmi secured a 4-0 win.

Ipswich strike pair Pablo Counago (28) and Kevin Lisbie (56th) were too sharp for Colchester at Portman Road as Jim Magilton's side secured a 2-1 win. The Us' consolation was scored by summer signing Steven Gillespie.

Luton endured a night to forget on their travels to Reading as they were thumped 5-1. The Royals have yet to really get going this season but goals from Noel Hunt, his brother Stephen, Alex Pearce, Jem Kavacan and James Henry ensured Steve Coppell enjoyed the most comfortable of evenings.

Rangers rampant

Queens Park Rangers had far too much for Carlisle at Loftus Road as a second half Emmanuel Ledesma hat-trick (56, 63 & 85) added to Damion Stewart's opener.

Crewe claimed a superb win at Gresty Road as Championship side Bristol City were seen off 2-1, courtesy of Anthony Elding's goal in the first half and Bryon Moore's in the second. Brian Wilson made a nervy finale when he scored three minutes after Moore, in the 79th, but it was the League One club that progressed.

Burnley were two strong for League One leaders Oldham as in-form Martin Paterson helped himself to a brace in a deserved 3-0 victory at Turf Moor.

Southampton outfoxed their Championship counterparts Birmingham as Lee Holmes (17) and Adam Lallana (86) secured the Saints' progression.

Beleaguered Derby boss Paul Jewell was offered respite from his league worries with a 1-0 win at Preston; a victory at Deepdale secured by midfielder Paul Green's effort five minutes before the break.

Goals from Ross McCormack and Peter Whittingham helped Cardiff to a 2-1 win over MK Dons at Ninian Park, whose consolation came from Sean O'Hanlon.

Watford needed extra-time to see off League Two Darlington, as substitute John O'Toole scored a winner following an entertaining 1-1 draw over 90 minutes.
