Saturday's League One action proved a superb day for Norwich and their promotion hopes as they were the only team to win in the top-six, while basement boys Stockport secured a rare success in a seven-goal cracker.

Grant Holt's second-half strike saw Norwich beat Oldham to go five points clear at the top of England's third tier.

Low scoring Latics again failed to trouble the scoreboard but Canaries striker Holt popped up in the 53rd minute to score as Paul Lambert's side took full advantage of Leeds' draw earlier in the day.

Huddersfield rescued a point against Leeds in the game's early kick-off to keep their unbeaten home record intact.

The Terriers took the lead through Anthony Pilkington's deflected shot before the Whites looked to have snatched a Galpharm scalp when Jonny Howson and Luciano Becchio got on the scoresheet but Gary Roberts' strike saw it end honours even.

Slip-up

It ended up being an excellent day for Norwich as fellow automatic promotion rivals Colchester succumbed to a 3-1 defeat at Bristol Rovers.

Rovers took the lead through Dominic Blizzard only to see John-Joe O'Toole equalise for the Us. But the hosts were not to be denied victory as second-half goals from Jo Kuffour and Chris Lines were enough, despite Kayode Odejayi's late strike, as the Pirates rise to ninth.

Swindon failed to capitalise on Colchester's slip-up as they drew a blank in their goalless draw at Leyton Orient.

The Robins, who are now unbeaten in 13, remain fifth while the Os stay 15th after a game that neither team managed to get a stranglehold on.

Millwall are level on points with Huddersfield after they overcame Hartlepool by a single goal at the New Den through Neil Harris' ninth minute effort.

MK Dons saw their play-off hopes suffer a blow as Yeovil claimed a 1-0 success at Huish Park.

The Glovers grabbed a first-half lead through Shaun MacDonald's 23rd minute strike and it proved the difference as they jump into the top half of the table in 12th.

Saints romp

Southampton came from a goal behind to emphatically beat Walsall 5-1 on home soil.

The Saints were a goal down after three minutes when Matt Richards found the back of the net via a free-kick but Jason Puncheon's goal on his home debut, a brace from Lee Barnard, Rickie Lambert's 26th goal of the campaign and Adam Lallana's late effort ensured the romp.

Ian Harte continued his prolific goalscoring season as he scored a brace to help Carlisle to a 2-0 win over Gillingham.

Harte took his tally to 14 with goals either side of half-time, including a second-half penalty, as the Gills' woeful away record sees them edge closer to the drop zone.

A Tommy Elphick header and a second-half cracker from Gary Dicker secured Gus Poyet's first home win as Brighton manager as they overcame Exeter 2-0 at the Withdean Stadium.

The win sees the Seagulls move five points clear of the bottom-four while the Grecians remain rooted in 22nd place having won just once in their last 14 games.

A bottom of the table clash saw Stockport clinch their first home win in a dozen league games as they were the victors of a seven-goal thriller with Wycombe at Edgeley Park.

The rock-bottom Hatters romped into a 4-0 lead through goals by Richie Partridge, Jemal Johnson and two from George Donnelly before a quick-fire brace by Matt Phillips and a Owain Fon Williams own goal acted as consolations as the Chairboys are dragged further into the relegation mire.

Brentford's clash with Tranmere fell victim to the weather as a waterlogged pitch meant the game was forced to be postponed.
