Hammond: Signed new deal at Southampton to keep him at St Mary's until 2014
Southampton captain Dean Hammond has handed the club a boost by signing a new long-term deal at the club.
Hammond has established himself as a key member of the Saints side since arriving from Colchester two years ago and helped them to win promotion from League One last season.
The 28-year-old has also played a key role in leading the side to the top of the Championship this term and he is delighted to pledge his future to the club.
"I'm very happy, delighted. I love being at the club and I've enjoyed every minute of it since I arrived two years ago, and I'm very thankful that the club has offered me a new contract," Hammond told the club's official website.
"It's a great club to be at and the ambition that the club has got is there for everyone to see. We started the season very well, and we're top of the Championship at the moment, so why would you want to be at any other club?
"Being top of the Championship is fantastic and we've started this season really well. When I joined this club the ambition was to get back into the Championship to start with, and we've done that, so now the ambition of the club is to get back into the Premier League and I hope to be a part of that.
"I'm 28 now so I'm probably coming into the best years of my career, and I'll be spending those at Southampton."
Southampton boss Nigel Adkins hailed Hammond as an 'ultra professional' after signing a deal to keep him at St Mary's until 2014.
"Since I joined the football club Dean has been top drawer, we have a lot of exceptional professionals here, but Dean Hammond is the ultra professional so I am delighted that he has signed a new deal," said Adkins.
