Brentford remain six points behind leaders Southend United after 3-1 victory over fellow promotion contenders Barnsley.
Southend's 3-0 home win over Scunthorpe United on Friday evening was followed by a similar success for The Bees on Saturday - thanks to a strike from Ricky Newman (12) and two goals from Lloyd Owusu (22, 85 pen).
Tommy Wright pulled a goal back for Andy Ritchie's Tykes on 68 minutes, but it proved not enough at Griffin Park.
Oldham Athletic left it late to move to within three points of the play-off places after a crucial 1-0 home win over ten-man Colchester United.
After Colchester lost Kemal Izzet to a second bookable offence three minutes from the end, The Latics claimed a dramatic winner in injury time through Richard Butcher.
Chesterfield's play-off hopes took a real dent after Tranmere Rovers came from a goal down to win 4-1 at Prenton Park.
After Jamie O'Hara (30) gave The Spireites the lead, goals from Sam Aiston (pictured - 36, 39), Chris Greenacre (45) and Stephen O'Leary (65) made sure of the points for the Wirral club.
A late strike from Leon Constantine (86) earned Port Vale a 1-1 draw at Doncaster Rovers after Leo Fortune-West (58) had found the scoresheet for the home side.
Nottingham Forest came from a goal down to earn a 1-1 draw with struggling Gillingham at The City Ground.
A Julian Bennett own-goal (8) gave The Gills an early lead, but Nathan Tyson (45) made sure the spoils were shared.
A goal from Damion Stewart (42) gave Bradford City a 1-0 win at Bournemouth, while strugglers Yeovil Town and Swindon Town had to settle for a goalless draw in a West Country derby clash at Huish Park.
Finally, ten-man Rotherham United held on for a goalless draw at fellow strugglers Blackpool, despite having Martin Butler sent off for violent conduct just before half time.
