Alan Irvine was happy to see his Sheffield Wednesday side claim a 2-1 win over Plymouth.

But the new Owls boss was less than convinced with the performance.

Plymouth had taken the lead through Rory Fallon, but Luke Varney's brace won it for the home side.

"The most important thing is that we won," Irvine said.

"Obviously we want to win and entertain and play attractive football, but at this moment we need to win.

"It's not what I'm aiming for in the long term, but I'll take it right at this moment.

"We need seven more wins to make sure we're in this division next season and I'll take seven more horrible ones like that if I have to.

"The finishes were excellent, although our play wasn't always pretty, I think we deserved it in the end.

"They didn't create too many chances in the second half, so we have to be happy with that."

Frustration

Plymouth boss Paul Mariner was left frustrated, saying: "I don't know what the possession stat is, but we had a lot of the ball, but we just couldn't break them down.

"They defended well, but other than a couple of efforts from (Jamie) Mackie we never really threatened.

"We know that we are in a dogfight.

"Clearly, the results haven't gone our way. but we'll play worse and get something from a game. Hopefully we can bounce back in the next game."
