Sheffield Wednesday boss Alan Irvine has admitted the club were unable to afford the fee to sign defender Eddie Nolan.

The full-back spent the end of last season on loan with the Owls and Irvine was keen to bring the 21-year-old back to Hillsborough.

However, Irvine has revealed his former club Preston North End wanted £100,000 for Nolan, which proved to be out of the Owls' reach.

Nolan has subsequently joined Scunthorpe United on loan with a view to a permanent move and Irvine is happy to have added Jon Otsemobor and Daniel Jones to his squad instead.

"We were quoted £100,000 for Eddie," Irvine told the Sheffield Star. "We didn't have £100,000 to spend on a fee, so we weren't able to do anything.

"We moved on, and got Jon and Daniel, and I'm delighted with what we've got. They look very promising just now.

"I think Preston realised they weren't going to get that sort of fee, in the current market."
