Feeney: Tipped to join Leeds
Grimsby Town manager Mike Newell has revealed he made an attempt to sign Leeds United-bound Warren Feeney.
Cardiff City striker Feeney is heading for talks with Leeds after being told he can leave the Championship club after spending last season on loan at Dundee United.
Newell also made an approach for the Northern Ireland international, but admits Grimsby were unable to compete with Leeds for his signature.
"I did have a number of conversations with Warren and he was interested in a move here - he was seriously considering it," Newell told the Grimsby Evening Telegraph.
"He didn't dismiss it out of hand, but when Leeds showed an interest, it was hard for us to compete with their financial resources.
"Had we been able to get to their level, we would have had a good chance of signing Warren, but ultimately it was difficult for us to match them.
"It shows the intent of the club, though, that we are looking at players to improve our squad that are capable of taking us to that next level."
Meanwhile, Newell has handed a trial to Swansea City forward Chris Jones, who spent a spell on loan at Cambridge United last term.
