Plymouth's acting chairman Peter Ridsdale has left the door open to Carl Fletcher to take on the full-time manager's role.
Fletcher was appointed as caretaker boss on Monday after the dismissal of former manager Peter Reid, and he has been told by Ridsdale he will be given a long-term deal if he influences an improvement in performances in League Two.
"When you talk about long term I don't know what it means. Now it's down to what happens on the field," Ridsdale told Sky Sports News.
"I've made it clear to Carl that if all goes well it will be a long-term position and it is down to him now.
Meanwhile, Ridsdale insisted potential new owner James Brent had nothing to do with the sacking of Reid.
"I consulted with James, but he was not part of the decision," said the former Leeds chairman. "He had the power of veto but this was a football decision made when we were bottom of the league on Saturday."
