Gareth McAuley believes Ipswich Town's position in the Championship table is 'embarrassing' and has offered his gratitude for the continued backing of the supporters.

A 0-0 stalemate at home to Bristol City on Saturday was the 17th draw of the season for Ipswich, who are four points outside the relegation zone.

Town lie 17th in the table and, despite a prolonged battle to avoid the drop, only the top five teams in the division have lost fewer games than Roy Keane's side.

McAuley understands why Ipswich have come in for criticism this season and stressed the players are eager to improve for Keane.

He said: "We are all fighting for the football club, no-one wants to be in the position we are in.

"We haven't produced enough results, so that's when the criticism is going to come towards the players and the rest of the staff.

"But we don't have sympathy with the manager, because sympathy's the wrong word. We all have respect for him and everyone wants to do well for him and push on.

"It's embarrassing really, the situation that we're in, struggling at the bottom. But the fans have stuck with us and it's very much appreciated."
