Owen Coyle was left rueing a defensive lapse and a bizarre goal after his Burnley side finally lost their perfect home record.

The Clarets went ahead early through Steven Fletcher but saw Wigan come back to take a comfortable 3-1 victory after goalkeeper Brian Jensen was taken off injured.

Coyle claimed that his side had opportunities to equalise when 2-1 down but threw away a chance of a point when they let in Emmerson Boyce from a corner.

"It's always disappointing to lose matches but given everything we offered to the match then yeah, doubly disappointed," he told Sky Sports after the match.

"We created numerous opportunities (and) were in the ascendancy when we lost our second goal.

Reaction

"Even then the reaction was fantastic and we had numerous opportunities to get back in it at two each and we switched off at a set-play

"It's hurtful to take there's no doubt about it because, as I say, I felt there were large periods of the game that we dominated, some terrific football resulting in real goalscoring chances."

Hugo Rodallega scored his first of two goals when Jensen injured himself coming for a Mario Melchiot cross, leaving the Colombian an empty net to slot the ball into.

Coyle believes that the freak equaliser was a turning point in the match.

"I think that (getting pegged back straight away) doesn't tell the full story, does it? I think the pictures will," he said

"We're leading 1-0 and it's a bizarre goal, there's no threat whatsoever. Brian's come to pick it up and twisted his ankle in the process and that's brought the game level.

Bad luck

"So, we'd started well, looked good and we feel (we would) go and, given the home record, gain the three points (but) a bizarre moment, really uncontrollable.

"It's just a bit of bad luck that sometimes comes your way and we certainly paid a heavy price for that."

Burnley face a crucial clash against struggling Hull next Saturday and Coyle says his side will be itching to bounce back from the Wigan defeat.

He added: "They're all big games, of course they are, and we want to gain as many points as we can and I wish the game was tomorrow, I really do, to get going again.

"It's not nice to lose the proud unbeaten home record that we've had but pretty sure we'll get into work Monday morning and look to get going again."
