Coventry City midfielder Kevin Thornton has left the Championship club by mutual consent.

Thornton came through the ranks at Coventry, but has failed to build on his early promise at the Ricoh Arena.

He was linked with Premier League side Aston Villa three years ago, but has struggled for form and fitness during his time with the Sky Blues.

The Irishman, who turns 23 next week, started just one Championship game last season and also had a spell on loan at Brighton & Hove Albion.

Meanwhile, Coventry boss Chris Coleman admits the club were unable to agree a deal to keep Guillaume Beuzelin for next season.

Coleman told the Coventry Evening Telegraph: "To give 'Boozy' another year, we would have had to keep him on the same contract.

"We were looking at what we are going to do this season and wanted to come to a different offer for him, but we couldn't agree with his agent."
