Plymouth Argyle have finalised the club record signing of Simon Walton from Queens Park Rangers.

The midfielder has accepted a four-year contract at Home Park and joins for a fee in excess of the £500,000 that Plymouth paid for Steven McLean in January.

Walton only joined QPR last summer, but was sidelined for several months after suffering a broken leg in pre-season.

He ended the campaign on loan at Hull City and Pilgrims boss Paul Sturrock is confident he has signed a bright prospect in the 20-year-old.

Perfect person

"I am delighted to complete this transfer," Sturrock told the club's official website. "Simon is a player who I have monitored for years and I feel he is the perfect person for us.

"He is 6ft 2in, strong, and athletic, and ideally suited to the sitting midfield role that we have been looking to fill.

"He is both young and experienced, and willing to learn, which is important. We have got a right good player for the future of Plymouth Argyle, a real nugget.

"We are prepared to wait for the right person, which Simon is, and hopefully there will be another two or three of his ilk following soon."
