Queens Park Rangers played out a five-goal thriller to eliminate Swindon in the first round of the Carling Cup, while Watford and Preston also progressed.

Angelo Balanta put QPR in front at the County Ground before Simon Cox and Billy Paynter turned the tie around for Swindon.

QPR, though, regained the lead after the break as Dexter Blackstock and Damien Delaney netted.

Championship outfit Preston had no such problems against lower league opponents Chesterfield as former Liverpool striker Neil Mellor netted twice to ensure a comfortable victory.

Watford also avoided an upset against Bristol Rovers, but they left it late as Will Hoskins hit the winner with two minutes remaining.

Swansea eliminated Brentford at the Liberty Stadium as Shaun MacDonald netted in the first half and the midfielder then added a second after the interval, while Marcus Bean was dismissed for the visitors after collecting a late second booking.

Shrewsbury are out of this year's competition as Carlisle progressed thanks to Peter Murphy's first half strike.

Darlington came from behind to knock-out Walsall at Bank's Stadium as Jason Kennedy and Billy Clarke cancelled out Michael Ricketts' opener.

Ricketts also went from hero to zero for the home side as he was shown a straight red card shortly after Kennedy's equaliser.

Wolves also survived a scare as they required extra-time to defeat Accrington Stanley 3-2 at Molineux.

The visitors took a shock lead as Paul Mullin headed League Two Accrington into a first half lead, but Wolves hit back after the interval as Chris Iwelumo nodded an equaliser.

And then in extra-time Iwelumo put his side in front, but Ian Craney equalised as Accrington restored parity.

Mark Davies, though, hit Wolves' winner and Accrington's woes increased late on as Robbie Williams was sent off for a late second booking.

Cheltenham also required an additional 30 minutes to defeat Southend as Ben Gill struck in the 115th minute to secure a 1-0 victory.

In another game which required extra-time, Notts County upset Championship outfit Doncaster thanks to Myles Weston's goal.

Rotherham eliminated Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday following a dramatic 5-3 penalty shoot-out victory.

Wednesday got their league season off to a flier at the weekend and things started well in the cup at Hillsborough as Etienne Esajas opened the scoring, only for Alex Rhodes to equalise.

Esajas then handed Wednesday an extra-time lead, but Reuben Reid equalised in the dying minutes to set up a dramatic penalty shoot-out victory for Rotherham, who also had Marc Joseph sent off.

Oldham had Craig Davies dismissed but were also capable of a dramatic win as they defeated Rochdale 4-1 on penalties following a 0-0 draw after extra-time.
