QPR have agreed a two-year deal with Crystal Palace captain Shaun Derry.

The 32-year-old midfielder will join Rangers on 1st July on a free transfer after helping Palace avoid relegation from the Championship last season.

Derry has played under Hoops boss Neil Warnock at Sheffield United and Palace and Warnock feels he will be a valuable addition to his squad as they set their sights on promotion from the Championship next season.

"I felt we needed another type of midfielder to what we already have," he told the club's official website.

"If we are going to be successful this season we need to cover every avenue.

"I know Shaun well. He is a good professional who will benefit the team."

Derry will be Warnock's second signing this summer having signed another of his former players earlier this month, goalkeeper Paddy Kenny from Sheffield United.

And Derry confirmed Warnock played a major factor in his decision to move across London to Loftus Road.

Big sway

"Neil was a big sway," he said. "When he comes calling, you have to consider what he brings to the table, and I really like working with him.

"He knows what he wants and he's got a way of getting the best out of people. Whenever I've played under him I've played my best football and long may that continue."

Derry, who began his career at Notts County and also enjoyed spells with Portsmouth and Leeds, will link up with his new team-mates when they report for pre-season training on 1st July.

"I'm delighted to reach agreement with the club," he added. "There's a very talented group of players already here.

"When QPR came to Palace at the end of last season, in my own opinion, they were the best side we played at Selhurst Park. That was the kind of performance Neil will want from us next season.

"The aim has to be to compete at the top - the top two ideally. We've definitely got the ability and the quality to get into the Premier League."
