Luton Town, Macclesfield Town and Milton Keynes Dons all knocked Championship opposition out of the Carling Cup on Tuesday evening.
League Two side Grimsby Town also advance with success over Tranmere Rovers, while Ipswich Town cruised in to the second round.
Elsewhere, Huddersfield Town were in fine form to down Bradford City and Hartlepool saw off Scunthorpe United.
Mick Harford's Luton stunned Plymouth Argyle at Kenilworth Road with Rossi Jarvis and Tristan Plummer netting either side of half-time to secure the success.
Macclesfield and Blackpool played out an action-packed encounter at Moss Rose as both teams ended with 10 men and Keith Alexander's side progressed.
Shaun Brisley broke the deadlock for the home side before Blackpool's Keith Southern and Macclesfield's Terry Dunfield were dismissed for violent conduct and Martin Gritton struck to wrap up the win.
MK Dons downed Glenn Roeder's Norwich City with Sam Baldock netting the vital goal in the 34th minute.
Grimsby advance to the second round with a 2-0 win over Tranmere at Blundell Park as James Hunt and a Ben Chorley own goal secured the triumph.
Ipswich romped to a 4-1 victory in their fixture against Leyton Orient at Portman Road as Danny Haynes and Tommy Miller struck twice in the space of two minutes before Haynes was on target again before the break.
Alan Lee netted shortly after the interval to extend the Tractor Boys' lead, and Adam Boyd scored a consolation for the visitors.
Huddersfield enjoyed a 4-0 success over Bradford at the Galpharm Stadium with Jonathan Worthington opening the scoring just after half-time before a Gary Roberts double and a goal from Robbie Williams completed the win.
Hartlepool recorded a 3-0 triumph against Scunthorpe at Victoria Park as Joel Porter, David Foley and James Brown all struck in the second period.
Colchester United claimed an away 1-0 win at Gillingham with Matt Heath scoring the only goal of the game on 11 minutes.
Northampton Town progressed after they beat Millwall at The New Den as Jason Crow struck the decisive effort.
