Leicester City's on-loan defender Ryan McGivern is keen to compete for a place in Manchester City's first team when he returns to Eastlands at the end of the season.

The Northern Ireland international has impressed with his country, while also doing well during loan stints with Morecambe and the Foxes.

However, he told skysports.com that he now wants to make a name for himself under Roberto Mancini and force his way into Manchester City's star-studded side.

"If you are good enough then you are old enough and the new manager, Roberto Mancini, is starting to hand a few of the young boys their debuts, so it does excite me for when I return," said McGivern.

"Obviously, I'm focused on helping Leicester have a strong end to the season first, but after that I'll go back to Manchester City stronger for the experience.

Massive club

"It will be hard to break into the side, but nothing in football is easy and I know that I will have to dig in and when that chance comes along I know that I have to take it."

Leicester have adjusted to Championship football with relative ease after storming to the League One title last season and are well placed for a top-six finish.

But McGivern is surprised at how well the Foxes have done, adding: "I expected this club to be fighting to stay in this division rather than aiming for a top-six finish.

"But this is a massive club with a great following and some quality players here, so it doesn't surprise me that much.

"We have been around the play-offs from start to finish really, so hopefully we can continue with that and earn a top-six finish."
