Burton Albion have signed Barnsley centre-half O'Neil Thompson on a 28-day loan deal.

The Jamaica international has made just two appearances for the Tykes this term, and has been drafted in as short-term cover amid an injury crisis at the Pirelli Stadium.

Injuries to Aaron Webster, Darren Stride and Richard Jackson prompted manager Paul Peschisolido to act, with suspension to Guy Branston adding to his worries.

Thompson, 26, only joined Barnsley from Norwegian side Notodden last summer, and Peschisolido admits he was recommended the player by a number of colleagues.

"We needed to bring someone in because of the shortage of defenders we have at the moment," he told the club's official website.

"I know a few people who know him from Jamaica and Barnsley and they speak very highly of him."

One of those thought to have put in a good word for the defender is compatriot Cleveland Taylor, who is also on loan at the club from Brentford.

Thompson said: "I've known Cleveland Taylor for the last nine or ten years now after we played together at Under-20 level for Jamaica.

"He's a good friend but now it's all about me doing what is required for the club."
