Brown: Nearly walked away

Hull City boss Phil Brown has revealed he nearly quit football prior to being named Tigers boss.

The former Bolton caretaker found himself out of the game for eight months in 2006 after being sacked by Derby County.

Brown landed the Hull City job in October later that year and guided the club into the top tier of English football for the first time in their history last season.

The 49-year-old has helped the club make an impressive start to life in the Premier League, but it could all have been different according to Brown.

"I thought football had turned its back on me," he told the Sunday Mirror.

Worst time ever

"After 27 years unbroken service in the game I then had eight months out. It is the worst time I have ever experienced.

"For me it would have been football's loss and horse racing's gain. I could have gone into racing. But whether it was that or a property business or whatever, I would have been 100 per cent into it.

"I served my time as an electrician and I still go back to my tools every so often. If it was necessary to put food on the table I'd go back to being an electrician. It's nice to have options."
