Hull City have rejected Wolves' final £5million offer for Republic of Ireland international Stephen Hunt.

The Molineux outfit have made no secret of their desire to secure the winger during the winter transfer window but have seen several bids snubbed by the Tigers.

Phil Brown's men are known to be keen to cut costs and reduce their wage bill amid debt concerns, but view Hunt as an essential member of their squad as they seek to preserve their Premier League status.

Mick McCarthy saw Hunt score from the penalty spot against his side in Saturday's 2-2 draw between the relegation rivals and decided to make one final attempt to land his man.

But the KC Stadium outfit have refused to budge from their long-held position that the former Reading player would not be moving on just six months after his arrival.

A statement on the Tigers' official website read: "In response to further released speculation, the club have received a verbal offer of £5million for Stephen Hunt.

"This has been completely rejected and we are not expecting any further bids."

McCarthy admitted that his attempts to bolster his squad were now over after seeing offers for Hunt and other targets knocked back.

McCarthy said: "We have offered to pay over the odds on three or four players but it is just not going to happen.

"We have been prepared to do it and we have bid more than others, but they don't want to come or the clubs don't want to sell.

"There has to be a cut off point."
