Phil Brown is hopeful Anthony Gardner will play for Hull City again this season after the defender damaged ankle ligaments.

Gardner picked up the injury a fortnight ago when he was stretchered off towards the end of the 3-0 defeat at relegation rivals West Ham United.

Initial fears that the former Tottenham Hotspur stopper had broken his leg were allayed and scans have shown up an ankle injury.

Tigers boss Brown expects the England cap to be out for another six weeks before the club will reassess the injury.

And Brown is optimistic that Gardner will return to his plans in time to feature in the closing games of Hull's bid to stay in the Premier League.

"There was no damage to the bone," said Brown.

"It's ligament trouble, so that will probably be five to six weeks (on the sidelines) and then we'll assess things.

"Who knows? Anthony could still have a big part to play in the end of season games, looking namely at the likes of Sunderland, Wigan and Liverpool."
