Easter: At the double
Blackpool's miserable week continued after they crashed out of the Carling Cup with a 4-3 extra time defeat at MK Dons.
Premier League trio Blackburn Rovers, Wigan and West Brom all eased their way into the third round though with routine victories on Tuesday night.
Sam Allardyce's Rovers overcame Championship new boys Norwich 3-1, Wigan put their league worries to one side with a 3-0 triumph at Hartlepool, while West Brom beat Leyton Orient 2-0.
But there was to be no Premier League clean sweep in this section after MK Dons striker Lewis Guy struck with 10 minutes of extra time remaining to eliminate Ian Holloway's Blackpool.
The Tangerines, who were crushed 6-0 at Arsenal on Saturday, had earlier battled back from 3-1 down to take the game into added time at Stadium:MK.
Jermaine Easter's double put the hosts in charge but Brett Ormerod, Ludovic Sylvestre and a late Charlie Adam penalty levelled matters after 90 minutes.
A near full-strength Blackburn progressed courtesy of a memorable hat-trick from on-loan striker Mame Diouf.
The powerful frontman, at Ewood Park from parent club Manchester United, was too hot for the Canaries to handle - defender Jens Askou grabbing a late consolation for Paul Lambert's men.
Roberto Martinez grabbed a much-needed victory at Victoria Park as his Wigan side progressed thanks to an early own goal from Pools centre-half Sam Collins and second half strikes from Jordi Gomez and Victor Moses.
West Brom also avoided an early exit thanks to goals in either half from Pablo Ibanez and Chris Wood against Leyton Orient at the Matchroom Stadium.
Brentford reached the third round for the first time since 1991 with a shock 2-1 win over Hull City at Griffin Park. The game looked destined for extra time after Robbie Simpson had cancelled out Mark Cullen's opener but Marcus Bean snatched a dramatic late victory for the Bees.
Elsewhere, Brian Laws' Burnley fought back well from a goal down to overcome Morecambe 3-1 at the Globe Arena.
Phil Jevons put the Shrimps in front on 12 minutes before Chris Eagles levelled matters and second half goals from Steven Thompson and Kevin McDonald sealed the win.
Lancashire rivals Preston were taken to extra time by Bradford at Valley Parade after Jake Speight struck eight minutes from time to cancel out Paul Coutts' opener.
However Keith Treacy grabbed the decisive goal in added time to send Darren Ferguson's men through.
Ipswich were also taken into extra time after playing out a 0-0 draw at Crewe. David Norris' strike 11 minutes into added time put the Tractor Boys through.
A late penalty from Steve Howard saw Leicester win an all-Championship battle with Leeds 2-1 at Elland Road.
Millwall also saw off competition from the same division as Steve Morison and Liam Trotter saw them to a 2-1 win against Middlesbrough.
