Hughes: Hat-trick hero

Oldham Athletic are the surprise League One leaders following a comprehensive 4-0 thrashing of Cheltenham.

Leicester's 3-1 win over Tranmere sees them move second while Carlisle United are third after being held by Leyton Orient.

Newly-promoted MK Dons are fifth after brushing aside Huddersfield. Yeovil are sixth after coming from behind to hold Leeds.

Oldham maintained their 100 per cent start to the campaign thanks to Lee Hughes' hat-trick against Cheltenham at Boundary Park.

Hughes netted his first on the stroke of half-time before adding two more in the second half with Danny Whitaker adding the icing on the cake with a late fourth.

Promotion hopefuls Leicester remain unbeaten after easing past Tranmere 3-1 at The Walkers Stadium.

Steve Howard and Matt Fryatt put the Foxes in control before Chris Shuker pulled one back. Fryatt scored his second in injury time to end Rovers' hopes of a point.

Carlisle dropped their first points of the season after being held to a goalless draw at Leyton Orient, the same result Northampton secured at home to Millwall.

The performance of the day goes to Bristol Rovers who put Hereford United to the sword 6-1 at the Memorial Stadium.

The Pirates were virtually out of sight after 22 minutes when they led 3-0 thanks to goals from Darryl Duffy (2) and Rickie Lambert.

Jeff Hughes added a fourth shortly after half-time before Lambert got his second of the game and Chris Lines added a late sixth. Stephen Guinan bagged an injury-time consolation for the visitors.

Colchester secured their first three-point haul of the season with a 3-1 success over Swindon.

Johnnie Jackson and Scott Vernon put The U's in control before Simon Cox brought the home side back in the game from the penalty post. Akanni-Sunday Wasiu's late effort wrapped up a fine win for Colchester.

Tommy Rowe's last-gasp goal gave Stockport a 1-0 win at Hartlepool while Paul Hayes' first half penalty was enough to lift Scunthorpe over newly-promoted Peterborough.

Crewe's season is up and running after they beat promotion hopefuls Walsall 2-1.

Anthony Elding opened the scoring with Joel Grant netting a second on the stroke of half-time. Stephen Hughes pulled one back in the second half, but there was to be no fairytale comeback.

Huddersfield remain winless three games into the new campaign after going down 3-1 to MK Dons.

Jude Stirling, Peter Leven and Sam Baldock all netted to seal the three-point haul before Gary Roberts could reply with a consolation for The Terriers.

Earlier on Saturday, Yeovil battled back from a goal down to claim a 1-1 home draw with Leeds, who led after just 25 seconds through Luciano Becchio.
