Leeds United have signed Birmingham City forward Gary McSheffrey on loan for the remainder of the season.

The former Coventry man has found first-team opportunities at St Andrews hard to come by, making just five Premier League appearances this term.

If McSheffrey impress Leeds could sign him for free in the summer as his current deal concludes at the end of the season.

Birmingham signed McSheffrey from Coventry in August 2006 in a deal believed to be worth up to £4million at the time.

The 27-year-old spent time on loan at Nottingham Forest last season, but a permanent move failed to materialise.

Leeds boss Simon Grayson should have McSheffrey available for the visit of Colchester as Leeds look to put their promotion charge back on track.

Experience

"Gary brings plenty of experience and he is a good signing," Grayson told the club's official website.

"He's coming from the Premier League to League One and he will add quality to the squad.

"He is a threat, he can play a number of positions, and we're delighted to have him here."
