Simon Grayson has blasted his Leeds United side following their humiliating 4-0 pre-season defeat to Bury on Tuesday evening.

The Whites fielded a strong side but were put to the sword by their League Two opponents at Gigg Lane just weeks ahead of the new season.

Leeds have now scored just once in their three pre-season outings to date and Grayson refused to defend his players in their latest defeat.

He has labelled the defeat a 'body blow' and that if they play in a similar vein in the Championship then they will be on the end of even heavier defeats.

"It hurts and it should hurt everyone connected with the club, mainly the players," Grayson told the club's official website.

Body blow

"It may be pre-season but it's preparation and that's a body blow.

"For 25 minutes we looked quite sharp and passed it well, but after that we didn't pass it enough, we didn't win tackles and we didn't show any energy.

"We gave the ball away too cheaply and didn't defend as a group.

"No one can come out with any credit. Max (Gradel) and Aidy (White) showed a bit of desire and passion when they came on, but...

"You can make excuses about a hard day's training on Monday, but that's what pre-season is about. It was a kick-up the backside.

"I expect more from them and the players have to take that. If we play like that in the Championship we'll get done by seven or eight.

"We have an amazing following and they didn't deserve to see that. It is pre-season, but there's no excuse for that."
