Southend United have signed youngster James Lawson to his first professional contract.

The 18-year-old has penned a deal until the end of next season with Steve Tilson's side after two goals in four starts for The Shrimpers.

Tilson was more than happy to give the teenage attacker a chance to formally embark on a professional career with the League One outfit.

"Laws has done very well for us this year and it was only a slight injury which eventually forced him out of the side," Tilson told the club's official website.

"The way he was playing, we couldn't leave him out but he needs to keep working hard.

"James must keep his feet on the ground but if he can do that, he will go on and have a really good career."
