Darryl Flahavan's future at Southend remains in doubt after his failure to agree a contract extension.

The veteran keeper has been offered a one-year deal to remain at Roots Hall, but after eight-years of service with the Shrimpers he is holding out for a two-year option to take him into his testimonial season.

Flahavan's agent, Dean Baker, admits that his client may be forced to seek a summer switch over the coming weeks as Southend appear unwilling to alter the terms currently on the table.

Deserved better

"The deal is still on the table and Darryl hasn't said yes or no to it yet, he's thinking about what to do," Baker told the Southend Standard.

"It's no secret that both Darryl and I were disappointed that he was only offered a year. He's done well for the club and we thought he deserved better. Two years would have taken him to a testimonial and we thought that was possible.

"But we've spoken to the club and they won't change the deal so Darryl will be taking his time.

"He's entitled to see what else there is available and that maybe something he opts to do, but I don't think he will make up his mind until the end of the month to be honest."

Striker sale

Elsewhere, the club have agreed terms with an unamed League Two side concerning the sale of Charlie MacDonald.

The Shrimpers rejected an offer from another fourth tier outfit last week, while they have also turned down a £25,000 approach from Blue Square Premier side Cambridge United.

The striker was one of seven players put on the transfer list by manager Steve Tilson and will now open personal negotiations with the interested party.
