Antony Sweeney is keen to get his future resolved as soon as possible and hopes that it will not involve being forced to leave Hartlepool.
He had been transfer listed during the January window, but after remaining at the club he is now hoping to be able to extend his stay at Victoria Park.
With his contract set to expire in the summer he admits that there is still a chance of him leaving, but is preferring instead to remain confident that a new deal could yet be agreed.
"I would rather not talk about the contract situation because it is just something in the background,'' Sweeney told the Northern Echo.
"I have never said I wouldn't sign a contract, it is just not at the minute.
"We will just see where it goes.
"I have never said I want to leave the club. I have been here seven years now. I think at 24 I am the second-longest serving player. It is a big part of my life, I live in the town as well.''
After making just eight starts in midfield this season, Sweeney has recently found himself being utilised at full-back by Pools boss Danny Wilson.
While admitting that defence is not his favoured position, Sweeny is just happy to be involved again following a recent spell out of the side.
"Surprisingly I have enjoyed it. I never saw it coming but it is something the gaffer has tried and thankfully it worked a little bit," he said.
"The move came out of the blue. Just at a training session before the Doncaster game last week. The gaffer asked me to slot in at right back.
"I never really thought it would be a thing to happen, but he has put me in and I am just happy to be playing.
"I can't say I am disappointed not to be playing and then moan about playing at right-back. If it keeps going I am more than happy.
"I am happy just playing. If it's at full-back, it is up to me to learn the position and get better and better at it. If that's where the gaffer plays me I am more than willing to do it.''
