Ghanaian defender Ransford Addo is currently on a short-term trial with League One outfit Crewe Alexandra.

The central defender, who plays for Royal Antwerp in Belgium, was recommended to the Railwaymen by Manchester United's reserve team coach Warren Joyce.

Crewe boss Steve Holland wants a new defender and believes Addo could fit the bill, with a decision to be made 'fairly quickly'.

He told the club's official website: "We have Ransford Addo with us on trial. He is currently playing in Belgium for Royal Antwerp and was recommended to us by Warren Joyce, who is the reserve team coach at United. He has also coached Royal Antwerp and everyone knows they have a connection with Manchester United.

"Warren has compared him with Craig Cathcart, who we are aware of at Manchester United. He spoke very highly of him and on that recommendation we have invited him for a trial.

Very intelligent

"He is a very intelligent man first and foremost and quick. He is not overly big but big enough and his reading of the game is good. We will assess how he looks over the next few days and see if he meets the required standard.

"From where he has come from, the standard he is playing in is very good. Antwerp play in front of healthy crowds every week.

"We will make a decision on him fairly quickly. Ideally we would like to organise a game for him but we have a hefty fixture list coming up, playing in midweek so that may prove difficult."
