Peterborough United boss Darren Ferguson aims to sign a Premier League midfielder on loan, with Darron Gibson his top target.

Ferguson confirmed his interest in Manchester United youngster Gibson after he scored in a pre-season friendly meeting between the two clubs.

Gibson spent a large portion of last season on loan at Wolves and has made just one substitute's appearance for United.

Red Devils manager Sir Alex Ferguson is keen for his younger players to go out on loan and is unlikely to block Gibson's temporary exit to his son's side.

Strong squad

And the younger Ferguson hopes to have a new signing in place for Peterborough's League One game with Northampton Town next weekend.

"I am still looking at a number of players, one from the Premier League and he is a midfielder," Ferguson told the club's official website.

"I just feel if we can get those additions in then we will have a really strong squad with players for every position.

"However, I am looking to bring players in that can play straight away and when the loan window re-opens, we will see if we can sort something out."
