Crewe manager Steve Holland has been relieved of his duties with Dario Gradi stepping in on a caretaker basis.

The Railwaymen are currently bottom of the League One table having won just twice all season and are already six points adrift of a position of safety.

Holland was appointed manager in July 2007 with long-serving boss Gradi moving to a role as technical director.

Gradi led the Gresty Road outfit from 1983 until 2007, making him the longest-serving manager in the country.

A statement on the club's official website read: "Crewe Alexandra Football Club have today announced that with immediate effect, Dario Gradi MBE will take over the role of first-team manager on a caretaker basis.

"Chairman John Bowler is in discussions with Steve Holland concerning his future role at the Football Club."
