Ronaldo: Another award
Not content with being named European Footballer of the Year this week, Cristiano Ronaldo has added another prestigious award to his ever-expanding collection.
PFA deputy chief executive, Mick McGuire, on announcing this November's PFA 2Up Fans' Players of the Month in all divisions, had this to say about the November winner in the Premier League.
"Cristiano burst onto the scene, predominantly, two years ago when winning the PFA Players' Player and Young Player of the Year awards. His attributes as a player are immense. He is quick, is a fantastic finisher, he can go either side of defenders, he is great in the air and, more importantly, he is so brave in taking responsibility and receiving the ball in all areas of the pitch."
In the Championship, the fans' favourite is Reading striker Kevin Doyle who continues to show why manager Steve Coppell rates him so highly - and why the Royals were so keen to tie him down to the new, longer contract he signed recently.
McGuire says of the Republic of Ireland international: "Kevin was signed for the princely sum of £75,000 and what a bargain he has turned out to be. He is undoubtedly a striker of Premiership quality; his movement is superb, showing both pace and imagination in getting behind defenders. Also, his goalscoring ability is without question."
The League One fans' award goes to Leeds United's exciting midfield talent Fabian Delph who has made such a dramatic impact under Gary McAllister at Elland Road this season.
McGuire says: "Having made his debut as a scholar, he has emerged this season as a player of immense promise. Little wonder that he is already attracting great interest from a number of Premier League clubs."
Finally, the Fans' Player of the Month in League Two for November is Jamie Ward, and this is what McGuire had to say about the Chesterfield favourite, "He has had an outstanding season so far and is looking forward to forcing his way into the Northern Ireland Under 21 side, and into the full international squad in the future."
The four divisional winners were recognised by football fans across the country, who voted on the PFA's website givemefootball.com, as the best players in their division during November 2008.
The PFA 2UP Fans' Player of the Month Awards are the only official awards of the Professional Footballers' Association that are voted for by the fans.
The awards are endorsed by the players and supported by the Premier League, Championship, League One and League Two clubs and The Fans Supporters Federation.
Four fans who voted for the winning players will be chosen to go to a match and present the trophy to the player. The winners will be chosen at random and will be announced later in the month.
