Crewe Alexandra have agreed a deal with Gudjon Thordarson to become their new manager.

The League One strugglers have been without a manager since Steve Holland was relieved of his duties last month.

Dario Gradi has been in tempoary charge of the club as they searched for a replacement.

Former Stoke and Barnsley boss Thordarson was believed to be the front-runner for the vacant post and he is thought to have pipped John Ward to the job at Gresty Road.

The Icelander's first game in charge looks set to be the FA Cup third-round tie at Millwall on 3rd January with Gradi set to stay in control for the festive games with Oldham and Hartlepool.

A club statement read: "Chairman John Bowler is pleased to confirm that the club are finalising details for the appointment of Gudjon Thordarson to become Crewe Alexandra's new first-team manager.

"The Football Club expect the Icelandic-born Thordarson to take up the new position before the end of December and his first match in charge of first-team affairs will be for our third round FA Cup tie at Millwall on Saturday 3rd."
