Beckford: Available for transfer
On the basis that he has 12 months remaining on his current contract and could leave on a free transfer next summer, we feel we must consider any offers that are forthcoming for him.
Leeds on Beckford
Quotes of the week
Leeds have made striker Jermaine Beckford available for transfer after he rejected the club's offer of a new three-year contract.
The 25-year-old, who has just 12 months left on his existing deal, plundered 27 League One goals this term, most coming alongside Luciano Becchio.
Disappointingly, Beckford failed to score in Leeds' two play-off semi-finals against Millwall and it now seems his future may lie away from Elland Road.
Rather than risk losing Beckford for free at the end of next season, the club are inviting offers in a bid to strike a deal suitable for both parties, otherwise he will remain part of Simon Grayson's team.
"As a policy, we will always look to retain our most effective players," chief executive Shaun Harvey told the club's official website.
"However we will only do so within the financial parameters that we believe are appropriate. The offer we have made to Jermaine is what we believe to be a very good offer but he has exercised the right to turn it down.
"On the basis that he has 12 months remaining on his current contract and could leave on a free transfer next summer, we feel we must consider any offers that are forthcoming for him.
"In the event that no offers are forthcoming or the offers received are unacceptable to us then he will remain part of Simon Grayson's squad next season."

I am a Leeds utd fan, however I live in Essex so it's a bit difficult to drive 3 hours each time to watch them play, With regard to Jermaine Beckford leaving Leeds utd, Everyone always has something to say whether it be positive or negative, but maybe we should just be happy we still have a club, personally I think we are in a much better position than that of Newcastle utd. In this current economic crisis, would you want all those premiership players on serious wages, I don't think so. One player doesn¿t make a team, if he wasn't there someone else would be having a go, as soon as you lose a great player like Beckford, everyone thinks that you¿re now playing the rest of the season with 10 men. Stop panicking, when he leaves, Leeds get a nice bit of cash and then will buy a half decent forward to partner Luciano up front, as passionate as we are, it's still just a game of football.

What i don't understand is why leeds are getting rid of douglas and not offering him a new contract, he's probably one of our best and most commited players, proven by playin at right back for a lot of this year when he normally plays in midfield and hasnt complained. if that was beckford he would have been throwing one of his tantrums straight away, he is not a team player, ok we may miss his goals but if we can find someone else that can work within the unit then he will not be missed too much, the club is better off without him: this was proven in the play offs, snodgrass should of taken the penalty...and if it wasnt for beckfords lack of commitment then we could well be in the championship now

How can all you Leeds united fans have a go at beckford? When he scored the goals to get you to the play offs, maybe he did miss a penalty but that doesn't make him a bad player. Beckford go join Newcastle or middlesborough in the championship an take them back to the premier league then just look and laugh at Leeds when they are playing in league 2 or even none league!!

jermaine beckford is a very talented striker and he has proved that over the last couple of seasons with leeds by scoring over 20 a season. he owes it to himself to move the a bigger club and test himself against better players. i think he would be a great sighning for a team like sunderland or a newly promoted team.

Beckford is not a good footballer. He may be able to score goals against lesser teams, but when up against a decent defense, ( even in div 1) he has failed to deliver.. on more than one occasion. He is a lazy player with not much skill.. or footballing brain. i.e not holding the ball , passing instead of greedily trying to score etc etc. He should go.. if anyone wants him?!! I for one am sick of watching leeds play with 10 men, carrying him.LAZY PLAYER... & AS FOR THE PENALTY?!!!!!!!!!!!

Football fans are a very fickle lot. Jermaine has been great for us - the *top* goal-scorer in England this season. And just because he wants to go and play in a higher division for more money, some are getting on his back. Probably every one of us would do exactly the same in the same situation. It isn't his fault that we didn't get promoted this year. Good luck Becks and thanks for all the great goals and memories. p.s. I hope we get a stack of cash for you!

Beckford aint Premiership class far from it He aint proven in the Championship and I dont rekon he'll cut it at that level either hes to lazy and goes missing not only in big games but also against the better sides and stronger centre-backs in League One!! so he wouldnt do a job in the Championship, and who in the Championship will offer him the sort of facilities and support that Leeds have? We got a better average gate than some premiership teams this season, bye Beckford you wont realise what youve got at Leeds til you've gone, fact! Becchio is a battler and shows passion on the field and if we use the money from beckford to buy a decent forward to play along side him and a couple of full backs we'll pass Beckford on our way up next season!

Ken Bates may put another offer on the table yet, which I hope Jermaine accepts. Having seen the way he celebrated after Becchio's goal, and his reaction after the final whistle last week at Elland Road, to me that didn't look like a player who wants to leave a football club. Clearly this rejected offer is about money, which is disappointing. A few more seasons with us, he can improve his quality and continue to score goals. He might struggle elsewhere. "What shirt am I wearing bruv? Are you being serious!?"

Jermaine Beckford is committing career suicide! What a plonker! So he'll end up signing for someone like Crystal Palace (bet you it's a southern club) for an extra £3-4k per week. Stick with Leeds and he's got a chance of playing in the championship (probably 2010/2011) and before long the prem (jury still out on whether he's good enough, although I doubt it). As a player why would you want to turn out for some middle of the road outfit when you could play for Leeds United and be part of a revival? I (without mentioning names) am good friends with a current member of the Leeds United squad. Apparently Mr Beckford is straight back down south at the slightest whiff of a few days off and does not bond with the team. On away days/team building exercises he does his own thing and is not liked by other members of the team as he thinks he's the 'bee's knees'. On this note Leeds are probably better off without him, however they do need to replace his goals. However his work ethic/body language/attitude does not appear to be ideal. Maybe Leeds want him out? However, from Beckfords point of view it makes no sense. Leeds United are, comfortably, the 4th biggest club in the country (Man U, L'pool, Ars). Lots of history, past success, huge fan base, largest one club city in the country and possibly europe and have bags and bags of potential for an investor. Short term, maybe he's better off at a higher level, but long term he's got the chance to be part of something exciting. Only an idiot would walk away from Leeds United to play for a mediocre championship club. Luton for immediate promotion!

Personally I think this could be a great move for both Beckford and the club.... After those playoff performances his time is clearly up and if we can cash in with a decent amount of money, everyone's a winner. Not wishing to put off perspective buyers (but I doubt shearer will be reading this) his first touch is dreadful, workrate even worse and he has proven record for bottling the big games, so will he be such a big loss?? If we can use the cash to bring in a decent keeper and get rid of the current clown between the sticks then we wont need a 34 goal striker to replace him - a 20 goal one will do - as we wont need to score as many! The striker from Gillingham reminded me a little of Beckford, raw pace and rough around the edges but he actually scored on his clubs big day - Maybe he would be worth a punt!! Time to go Mr Beckford and thanks for nearly being good enough!

Leeds, like Newcastle are a brilliant club and if people don't want to play for them in the lower leagues, at an appropraite wage, then good bye and good riddence. As Leeds found out, and Newcastle are about to, no one is bigger then the club.

Good Riddens to Beckford. He is nothing short of a Southern softie. He was outfought by the Milwall centre half in the play offs and could have still have been playing now and not scored. He has no concept of hard work and if we got 1million for him we should snap their hands off. He is not a team player and does not deserve Leeds United, Leeds fans want hard working honest players to wear the shirt, Beckford has none of these attributes, go now and do us long suffering Leeds fans a favour, we will pass you on the way up. Marching on together.

Its time Beckford left, we can all picture his sulky face during our last trip to Wembley last year when he wasnt getting his own way. If the ball isnt handed to him on a plate then he isnt interested in working with his team mates to get it. Again he did nothing in the two games against Millwall and he needs to move on. It will have a positive effect on the team because they will get the message that the club is not about one individual. The team has 10 players playing for Leeds, eachother & the fans and then one playing for himself, please Beckford just leave. It would be interesting to see Liam Dickinson getting some more matches alongside Becchio...

Football is dead and buried, you only have to look at players like Beckford to see that. In the 70's and 80's players would play their hearts out for the team they played for, they were proud to wear the shirt they represented. This type of attitude is as good as dead nowadays, so why is everyone at Leeds so shocked? Players don't play for a club anymore, they play for themselves, all they care about is money. Beckford doesn't care about Leeds United, he never did and never will, just the same as he won't give 2 hoots about the next team to sign him. If Beckford had have stayed at Leeds for another couple of seasons he could have earned himself a legend status and might even have been in the history books as the clubs all time record goalscorer. What better accolade to achieve than a cemented place in the history books? Sadly, all he wants is money. He is a good player but he isn't half as good as he seems to think he is. As long as we don't sign his attitude impared behind, I'll be happy. He's not even proven outside the 3rd division, did he even score for Leeds when they were in the Championship? I think not. Whoever does buy him will be taking a massive gamble in my eyes.

Although, Beckford has scored 34 goals last seaon I dont' think the majority were in DIv 1 games. Also, his first touch on the ball and his work rated is not the best. The question he shoudl be asking himself is how can he improve can he. Also, Bechio has worked his socks of most games and given Beckford the chances for most of his goal. With Beckford expected to Leave ER it will be a good chance for SG to try Bechio and Grella together in the pre-season games. We should most definatly keep Snograss, Robinson, and Sonje as well. With a one or two good signings for next season we will be in good shape for auto- matic promotion.

Beckford is being smart. Of course he wants to leave, and who can blame him. If a league 1 player is being courted by Premier and Championship clubs then it's wrong to stand in their way. A footballer owes it to himself to get as high as possible in the game. It's players that engineer moves from one premiership club to another just to earn money that are the mercenaries. Instead of handing in a transfer request, Jermaine's obviously been advised to reject a new contract so that the fans don't turn on him. He's done very well for Leeds and scored some very important goals. Yes he fluffed the playoff's, but without him we wouldn't have been anywhere near them in the first place. Next we'll lose Delph, as there's premiership clubs sniffing round him too. Neither losses come as a surprise though. I knew this would happen if we missed promotion again. They are quality players and they should be playing at a higher level. On a positive note, Grayson is the right man (something Leeds haven't had for a few years) and he's brought a team spirit to Elland road, which is something we haven't had since O'Leary took it away with him. Providing he's given the money raised from the sales and re-invests it well, we'll go up this year.

Yes Beckford has scored a lot of goals but he also doens't have the workrate or puts the energy in that other players do!! He very much waits for the ball to come to him and doesnt fight for it and he showed that perfectly in both legs aginst Milwall!! I feel the right decison has been made here and that if he is making ridiculous demands then now maybe the time to cash in on him!!
