Skysports.com understands Ray Mathias has emerged as favourite for the vacant manager's job at Tranmere.

Tranmere are looking for a new manager following the sacking of John Barnes last month.

Les Parry has been in caretaker charge of the side, but the club are keen to install a new boss as soon as possible to arrest their slump in form.

Former Tranmere player Mathias is believed be emerging as a serious contender for the role at Prenton Park.

Mathias has already had one spell as manager of Tranmere in the 2002/03 season and the club's board could turn to the former Blackburn assistant boss to help steady the ship at the League One strugglers.
