Bristol Rovers boss Paul Trollope says he will not rush into a decision about signing new loan recruit Pat Baldwin on a permanent basis.

Baldwin has joined Rovers on loan until January 2 after struggling for first-team football at League One rivals Colchester United.

The defender has been tipped to make his stay permanent at the Memorial Stadium, but Trollope will take his time before reaching a conclusion on Baldwin's long-term future.

"Initially it's a loan until 2nd January, and we will assess the situation on an ongoing basis as to what happens after that," Trollope told the club's official website.

The 27-year-old is likely to make his debut against Gillingham on Saturday and Trollope is happy to have added Baldwin to his squad.

He continued: "We are delighted to secure Pat's signature and pleased that the loan spell takes us through a busy spell in the short term and also over the Christmas period.

"Pat is a very experienced League One defender who has tasted a promotion out of this division with Colchester, and played regularly in the Championship.

"He brings a lot of good defensive qualities with him and his versatility enables him to play in a number of defensive positions, whilst his experience will, I'm sure, be a huge benefit to us over the forthcoming weeks."
