Charlton Athletic ace Matthew Spring has urged the club to keep hold of their prized assets in January, amid reports the club may have to sell their top players.

A number of players have been linked with moves away in recent weeks, including skipper Nicky Bailey and teenage sensation Jonjo Shelvey.

But Spring, 30, has told skysports.com that it could to prove to be a big mistake if key players are allowed to leave in January.

"That is obviously a decision for the people upstairs to make, but the club is in a very good position at the moment and everyone knows that if you start selling your best players then results might start to go south as well," Spring told skysports.com.

"I think that the people upstairs have to weigh up the situation and find out what is best for the club and hopefully that won't be to sell our best players."

Charlton's thrilling 4-2 win over Bristol Rovers was spoiled somewhat by Leeds' last-gasp winner over Leyton Orient in midweek, but Spring, who played for Leeds in 2004, insists their results do not bother them too much as long as The Addicks keep winning as well.

"It takes time for a season to take shape," he continued.

"But I think that it is starting to take shape now and as long as we keep winning then I don't think we will be too bothered if Leeds keep winning as well.

"If we can both pull clear then that will work for both of us, but we are both doing well and it has been a good season so far."
