Colchester United boss Adrian Boothroyd is hoping to close the gap on the League One leaders against Southend on Monday night.

The Us are currently five points behind third-placed Charlton with two games in hand, starting with the visit of The Shrimpers.

Boothroyd admits the likes of Norwich, Leeds and The Addicks deserve to lead the way because of their form and results to date.

However, the former Watford man insists his side have the determination to push the leading pack all the way this season.

"We're under the radar so far. People are talking about Charlton, Norwich and Leeds and quite rightly so because they've done very well so far," he told Sky Sports.

"We're still in there. We've been in and around the top four since I've been here so we just need to keep plugging away, do our stuff and get a result."

Colchester's Weston Homes Community stadium is virtually covered with mud and Boothroyd does not believe Monday's game will be one for the purists.

"It's a throw-back to the 70s in terms of the mud that we've got in," he added. "We've not been able to have the drainage right for the weather and everything.

"It should be a leveller. It should be a good old full-blooded English game."
