Oldham Athletic have taken former Preston North End and Norwich City winger Simon Whaley on trial.

Whaley is a free agent after his contract was cancelled by Norwich before the close of the transfer window and he has pitched up at Boundary Park.

The 24-year-old will feature for Oldham's reserves in Wednesday afternoon's Manchester Senior Cup tie against Bury, the club with whom he started his career.

The wide man only joined Norwich last summer from Preston for an undisclosed fee and signed a two-year contract at Carrow Road.

However, after making six appearances for the Canaries, he quickly fell out of favour under Paul Lambert, who had replaced Bryan Gunn as manager early in the season.

He undertook loan spells at Rochdale and Bradford City, and Whaley is now hoping to convince Oldham boss Dave Penney to offer him a deal.
