Southend United have recruited David Webb as their assistant manager for the rest of the season.

Webb returns to Roots Hall for his fifth spell in a managerial capacity after the dismissal of Paul Brush, who was Steve Tilson's assistant until Monday.

His most recent stint came as a caretaker in 2003 before the arrival of Tilson, having overseen the Shrimpers on four separate occasions.

The 63-year-old guided the Essex club to two successive promotions from the old Fourth Division into the second tier between 1989 and 1991.

United are languishing in the League One drop zone with chairman Ron Martin deciding a change in the management at the club was needed to help beat the drop.
