Brentford manager Andy Scott has ruled out making a move for young Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny.

The 20-year-old Poland international impressed while on loan at Griffin Park last season, making 28 appearances between the sticks for the Bees.

However, despite attending Brentford skipper Kevin O'Connor's recent testimonial game against Fulham, Scott told skysports.com that the Pole will not be returning to the club this season.

"Wojciech came along to watch the Fulham game as it was Kevin O'Connor's testimonial and they got on well while he was here last season," he said.

"Wojciech is more than welcome to come down whenever he can, but I think that his ambitions lie at Arsenal now and I can fully understand that considering how well he progressed here last season.

"We were very fortunate to have him on board last season and we were glad that we could contribute to his career progression, but he was simply there to watch the game."

Resolute

With just nine days to go before the Bees travel to Carlisle United for their opening game of the League One season, Scott has highlighted the need to create a resolute defence rather than improving on their attacking play.

"We had a good week out in Portugal, which helped blend the new faces in to the squad and also helped raise the fitness levels," he added.

"The Fulham game highlighted our weaknesses and showed us which areas we need to improve on, but it allowed our defensive unit to play together for the first time.

"We will be looking to build on that and then work on our attacking play and scoring goals, but good teams are built on strong defences and that is our priority at the moment."
