Bournemouth captain Jason Pearce has played down speculation linking him with a move to Middlesbrough.

Pearce has impressed for the Cherries in recent times and reports have suggested he could be a target for clubs higher up the league ladder.

Championship outfit Boro are thought to be interested as manager Gordon Strachan ponders strengthening his defence after a frustrating start to the season.

However, the former Portsmouth youngster, now 22, has told skysports.com that he is focused on helping Bournemouth establish themselves in League One.

"I've not heard anything about any type of interest in me to be honest and I'm not sure what to make of it because there is a lot of paper talk around this time of year and most of it is purely speculation anyway," he explained.

"It is always nice to hear big clubs being linked with you in the papers, but I prefer to concentrate on doing well for Bournemouth."

Bright future

The Cherries have made the step up from League Two look relatively simple after tasting defeat on just one occasion so far, at Charlton on the opening day of the season.

A number of their players have reportedly attracted attention from other clubs, but Pearce says that just shows the quality at manager Eddie Howe's disposal.

"We've got a good, young squad here and I wouldn't be surprised if a couple of our players are being linked with big clubs, but we obviously want to keep everyone together here and try to progress as a team," he said.

"I'm sure that some of these players will go on to bigger and better things in the future, but hopefully that won't be any time soon because I'm confident that this club has a bright future ahead of it."
