Scunthorpe boss Nigel Adkins has not given up hope of taking over as the new Southampton manager.

Adkins and his assistant Andy Crosby have already agreed terms with the South Coast club but confusion surrounds their proposed appointment at St Mary's.

The two clubs are still to agree a compensation package and Iron chairman Steve Wharton suggested on Thursday that Saints had withdrawn their offer, while claiming the League One side had been 'very difficult to deal with'.

Adkins claims that discussions are ongoing and that he will not be leaving Glanford Park unless his current employers and Southampton can strike a deal.

Compensation

Adkins said: "Southampton have approached our football club in the right manner and the chairman and directors have allowed me the opportunity to speak to Southampton.

"There have been further discussions where we have talked about the possibility of becoming the manager of Southampton.

"If Nigel Adkins leaves Scunthorpe United it should be done in the right manner and it should be done with the clubs agreeing a compensation deal.

"The fact of the matter is compensation has not been agreed as it stands."
