The Magpies ushered their manager through the exits on Sunday following a run of five straight defeats.

Having also failed to find the target during that alarming slump, it was decided that changes were necessary.

Ince, who had only been in charge since October, was the man deemed to be ultimately responsible and he paid the price for the failings with his job.

Rodwell claims the decision was not taken lightly, but insists a tough call had to be made for the sake of the club.

He told Sky Sports News: "It was a difficult decision. Everyone at the football club has got an immense amount of respect for Paul and what he's done in the game, and for him as a guy.

"I've only known him for a short period of time, but he's a good guy and a top man. Unfortunately, we as a board felt we needed to make a change."

Rodwell admits Ince can consider himself unfortunate not to have been given at least one summer in which to try and mould the County squad, but believes the former England international will appreciate that the board could not stand by idly and watch the club slip ever closer to the League One relegation zone.

Pressed on why the axe was wielded at Meadow Lane, Rodwell added: "I think it's just results and performances. I think all managers are judged on that.

"I feel sorry for Paul because he didn't have the opportunity to have a pre-season with the players or to sign players, and I think that's very unfair. Unfortunately, the only thing we felt we could do as a board is change things.

"We had a chat with Paul, he understood where we were coming from and was a consummate professional, and that was the only change we could really make.

"I think our results and statistics at the moment speak for themselves."
