Bristol City moved into second place following an impressive 3-0 win at Oldham Athletic, as Scunthorpe and Nottingham Forest both drew.
Enoch Showunmi, who was instrumental in the demise of Coventry in the FA Cup in midweek, struck first, breaking the deadlock after just nine minutes.
James McAllister doubled the lead eight minutes before half-time, and it left the hosts with a mountain to climb after the interval.
City's advantage proved insurmountable and the visitors even claimed a third goal in the 65th minute to complete a comprehensive win.
Scunthorpe still lead the division, despite surrendering a two-goal lead at Doncaster.
Andrew Keogh (15) and Andrew Talbot (23) appeared to have set the Lincolnshire side on their way to victory.
However two goals in two minutes just before the hour-mark saw Doncaster pull level. Graeme Lee pulled a goal back (57) before Jason Price claimed a 2-2 draw for his team.
Nottingham Forest, meanwhile, slipped to third place after a goalless draw at Swansea.
Millwall were the big winners on Saturday - their 4-0 win over Rotherham underlined their recent improvement and also the plight of the visitors.
Neil Harris (16) and Chris Zebroski (26) got the ball rolling for the hosts and Darren Byfield's 39th minute goal killed the match as a contest, with the striker then adding his second goal in injury time.
Yeovil and Blackpool are also going well after recording 1-0 wins over strugglers Brentford and Leyton Orient respectively.
Brentford faced an uphill task as early as the sixth minute with David Partridge was dismissed for violent conduct. Leon Best claimed the matchwinner in the 56th minute.
Brentford finished the game with nine men when Che Wilson also received his marching orders.
Blackpool earned a late victory at bottom club Brentford through Keith Southern's 85th minute goal.
Crewe claimed a 2-0 win at Carlisle through goals from Julian Baudet (53) and Nicky Maynard (90) and Huddersfield left it late to record a 2-1 win at Bournemouth.
Danny Schofield struck (85) after Bournemouth's Steven Purches (43) had cancelled out a goal from Jonathan Worthington (12).
Elsewhere, Joe Gatting (50) claimed a 1-0 win for Brighton at Chesterfield and Cheltenham drew 1-1 with Gillingham. Basir Savage (6) opened the scoring for The Gills, but J.J. Melligan equalised (17).
