Scunthorpe defender Cliff Byrne has signed a new deal to extend his stay at Glanford Park.

The former Sunderland man has agreed a 12-month contract extension to commit himself to the Iron until June 2010.

Byrne has started over 150 games for Scunthorpe since joining the club five years ago following a successful loan spell.

The 26-year-old still had a year to run of his current deal but manager Nigel Adkins moved quickly to secure the services of one of his key players as he prepares for life back in League One.
