Bristol City boss Gary Johnson has told skysports.com his side's change in style has effected their goalscoring potential.
City have found goals hard to come by in recent games but are still firm favourites to clinch promotion to the Championship.
After scoring only 12 goals in their last 12 games, City found the net twice and had a third disallowed in their victory over Yeovil Town at Ashton Gate.
The result means they could wrap up promotion on Saturday if they win at Carlisle and nearest rivals Nottingham Forest lose at home to Bournemouth.
"Of course, clubs will always be wanting to score more than they currently do, but it doesn't always work like that," explained Johnson.
"We made a conscious decision going into the run-in that we were going to be more solid all over the pitch, but the fact that switching style and tightening things up at the back is going to have an effect on other areas of your game, so maybe we have been creating a little less.
"It's rare that going into the business end of the season sides will be quite as gung-ho, so we've held back a bit and the result is that although we've been involved in low-scoring matches, we're nearing the finishing line."
Meanwhile, City captain Louis Carey is close to signing a new deal at Ashton Gate after receiving a "very good" offer from the club.
The defender's current deal expires in the summer and he is keen to stay with the League One promotion chasers.
"The chairman and the manager have put a very good contract to me which I am just looking at at the moment," Carey told the Bristol Evening Post.
"They have shown an interest in keeping me here and I thank them for that and I hope it works out so I can sign soon."
