Steve McClaren admits it will take time for Nottingham Forest to play the attractive passing game he is keen to develop at the City Ground.

Former England coach McClaren took charge of Forest over the summer and has already had to dismiss rumours about his future following claims he was frustrated by the lack of transfer activity.

He has also overseen a disappointing start to the season on the pitch, having won just one of his opening five Championship games and witnessing a 4-1 thrashing at home by West Ham United in their last match.

However, McClaren is adamant that the rewards of his change in approach at Forest will not be delivered overnight.

"We are trying to play and pass the ball and sometimes there are mistakes made within that, but we will grow and get better. It takes a long time to develop a passing game," McClaren told the Nottingham Post.

"It can take longer to develop that than the other way around, if you are a more direct team.

"We want to find a balance and we want to play football. I want to try to win in an attractive way - although winning is the most important thing above all.

"It will take time to fine tune the way we want to do things."
