Blackpool have signed Australia international David Carney from FC Twente, subject to Premier League approval.

The Tangerines were busy on transfer deadline day and are believed to have sneaked through another deal, signing Carney for an undisclosed fee.

The versatile 26-year-old is thought to have signed a one-year deal with the newly-promoted Premier League club, with the option of a further year, although Blackpool are awaiting confirmation the deal has gone through.

Carney joined Dutch club FC Twente last summer on a two-year deal after failing to establish himself in the Championship with Sheffield United.

League title

The former Everton trainee, who can play down either wing but particularly the left, made eight substitute appearances as ex-England boss Steve McClaren led Twente to the club's first-ever Eredivisie title.

Carney did enough to earn a place in Australia's World Cup squad this summer and started their last two group games in South Africa, taking his tally to 28 international appearances.

On his return to Holland, Carney started each of Twente's first two league games but was then dropped and has been allowed to have a shot at the English top-flight as Twente have three other left-sided players in Dwight Tiendalli, Nicky Kuiper and Bart Buysse.

After being released by Everton in 2003, Carney had short stints with Oldham and Hamilton before returning to Australia with Sydney FC, where he kick-started his career and earned a move to Sheffield United in 2007.

Blackpool also clinched the permanent signing of Leicester striker DJ Campbell on deadline day while signing young winger Matt Phillips from Wycombe for an initial fee of £325,000.
