Roberts set for Rovers switch

Tranmere defender Gareth Roberts is set to join Doncaster Rovers this summer.

The Welsh left back, a former Liverpool trainee, has been a regular for Tranmere for several years.

However, his contract at Prenton Park expires in June and several clubs have expressed an interest in signing him.

Doncaster boss Dave Penney looks likely to win the race and complete the transfer on July 1.

The two parties are currently holding talks, as Penney looks to strengthen his squad ahead of next season.

The imminent arrival of Roberts has prompted Penney to withdraw his offer of a contract extension to defender David Mulligan.

"We have spoken to Dave and his agent throughout the week and he was looking for better terms but also reassurance that he will have a position in the team," Penney told the club's official website.

"We see him mainly as a utility player especially with the signings we have made, so cannot guarantee him first team football.

"We have now withdrawn the offer of a contract and thank him for his contribution to the club, plus wish Dave every success in the future."
